About this business
Origin story
A land trust board and two funeral directors spent four years arguing about whether burial belonged on a restored prairie. The trust said yes on the condition that the burials fund the stewardship in perpetuity. The first was in 2019.
Why families choose us
Every burial here pays for the ground it happens in. The eighty acres we bury in were row-crop farmland until 2016 and are now restored prairie and oak savanna under a permanent conservation easement, which means the land cannot be built on after we are gone. Graves are hand-dug, three and a half feet, marked with a flat native fieldstone and recorded by GPS so any family can find their person in twenty years when the grass is tall. No vault, no embalming, no metal. Your person is buried in a shroud or a plain wooden or wicker casket, and families who want to may carry the casket to the grave and fill it themselves. We meet families in Oak Park, and we will drive you out to walk the ground before you decide anything.

How far is the burial ground from the city?
About fifty minutes west of Oak Park. We will drive you out to walk it before you decide, and there is no charge for that visit.
Can our family fill the grave ourselves?
Yes, and many do. Shovels are there, the ground is hand-dug, and you may take as long as you need.
Does a Muslim or Jewish burial work here?
It does. No vault, no embalming and rapid burial are the practices this ground was designed around, and we can usually bury within a day.
How will we find the grave later?
Each is marked with a flat native fieldstone and recorded by GPS in a register the land trust keeps, so it stays findable when the prairie is shoulder-high.
