About this business
Origin story
The cemetery's board was two funerals a month from insolvency in 2014 when its groundskeeper, Marta Kowalczyk, proposed retiring four acres of unsold lawn into native planting and selling green graves in it. She manages both sections now.
Why families choose us
You do not have to leave the county to be buried in the ground without a vault. Our four-acre section sits inside a cemetery that has been here since 1887, along the creek, and it is a fifteen-minute drive from most of the near west suburbs — which matters more than families expect when they think about visiting in February. Everything that goes in the ground breaks down: shrouds, wicker, unfinished pine, and the mushroom suits we stock for families who want them. We will plant a memorial tree on the family's chosen spot in the spring or fall planting window and give you the species list to choose from. Old sections of the cemetery still take conventional burials, so a family split between traditions can be buried in sight of each other.

Can we choose the exact spot?
Yes. Walk the section with us and pick it. We will hold it while you decide, and there is no cost to walk it twice.
Is a headstone allowed?
A flat native stone, engraved, laid level with the ground. Upright monuments belong to the older sections and we will show you both so you can see the difference.
When can a memorial tree be planted?
In the spring or fall planting window, on the spot you chose. We keep the species list short on purpose so what goes in survives the clay.
